Digital Photo Camp - Middle School

Take photos like a pro! Students will learn the fundamentals of photography, natural and studio lighting, still life compositions, landscapes, close-ups, portraits, and special effects.

A small class size allows individual instruction tailored to each student’s camera type, experience level, and artistic interests. This 5-day camp, taught by local fine art photographer and educator Jacqui Turner, will transform a beginning photographer into an imagemaker, and advanced students into artists.

Students will take walking trips to El Estero Lake, Del Monte Beach, Monterey Wharf, Dennis the Menace Park, and other local locations within walking distance of the Lyceum.  There will also be a 30 minute paddle boat excursion on El Estero Lake.
This Camp requires a LOT of walking.  Students should be comfortable walking and being on their feet for most of the day.

Camera requirements: Students must have their own digital camera.  To get the most out of the camp, a  DSLR digital camera is recommended (18-55mm).  Students may use a "point and shoot" camera, but be aware there will be some discussion topics not applicable to their cameras.  iPhone or similar phone cameras are not recommended.

Beginning Spanish Language Camp

Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world.  Learning Spanish not only helps you communicate with people locally who may not know English, but also unlocks opportunities professionally and internationally.  You can travel a lot of places knowing Spanish!  This summer camp provides middle school aged students with little or no prior knowledge of Spanish with the elementary skills, grammar, and vocabulary necessary to read, speak and write in Spanish at a basic level.  Students will be given tools and materials that they can use to continue practicing at home over the week of camp.  It's important to remember that learning a language is a lifelong journey, but that a summer camp can be a great place to start developing those language skills.

The topics that we will cover include:

  • Introducing and describing yourself, your family, and other places, people, and things
  • Expressing your likes and dislikes, your needs, and your feelings
  • Obtaining and giving directions and other information like phone numbers
  • Commonly-used expressions and phrases

It is recommended that while students are taking the camp, that they dedicate at least one or two hours of additional study time at home to reviewing the material and doing the homework assignments.

Hours: 9:00am - Noon
