Writing for Change

This course introduces students to writing as a tool for political and social change. Using a variety of exercises, case studies, and independent research, students will answer the following questions: How can I make my voice heard? How can I affect change in the political process through writing? What strategies can I use to make my writing more persuasive? As a (insert time period here) workshop, the goal is to inspire students to engage in social issues in new ways and to take meaningful action to write for change.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand persuasive writing techniques through the lens of ethos, logos, and pathos keeping in mind subject, occasion, audience, purpose, speaker and tone.
- Apply the “Seven Tips for Superb Writing in Graduate School”, created by Middlebury Institute Professor Jeff Langholz, to their writing.
- Engage in the democratic process by crafting a persuasive letter to a politician or community leader about a position of their choice.
