"CREATIVE FUN WITH COLLAGE ART” SUMMER CAMP

Art campers, we invite you to join collage artist and instructor Lisa Handley for this week of creative expression and enjoyment. We will experiment with shape, color, size and composition as we explore a variety of collage techniques and designs in paper, mixed media and “everyday ephemera” such as maps, postage stamps, magazines and old book pages.

Lisa is planning many fun activities including mosaics, Japanese cut paper notans, torn paper monochromes, mini collages (inchies, twinchies and artist trading cards), surreal portraits, mandalas, vision boards, found poetry and more. In addition to self-expression, we can collage for mindfulness and for acts of kindness! Register now to enjoy this fun-filled week of creativity and collage!

Does your child love all things Space related?  Then this is the summer camp for them!  Our campers will go in depth and learn about our solar system with a hands on approach. They'll learn about the planets, the phases of the moon and what life is like in space.  

Campers participate in a variety of fun and engaging hands-on projects like designing their own air rocket, making clay shuttles, and designing a spacesuit.  They'll spend the week making new friends who love space science too, doing individual, partner and group projects throughout the week.

In this camp, students will learn to observe and draw the natural environment. We will introduce basic techniques of scientific illustration in black-and-white and color media. Students will learn how to use watercolors, colored pencils, graphite and ink.

The topics covered will include:

• Drawing insects from pinned specimens
• Flower dissection and illustration
• Sketching animals

At the end of the camp, students will create a nature journal of their work. This camp will develop observational and artistic skills and foster engagement with the natural world.

Have you ever wondered how the electronic devices that you use every day work, or thought about developing your own “smart” devices to control things around your house? If so, this camp will help you fill some of those gaps in your knowledge! Using the Arduino platform, participants will learn the basics of electronics, programming, and coding through a series of hands-on modules.

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. The Arduino ecosystem is intended for anyone hoping to make their very own interactive projects.

Some of the projects include:

  • Analog vs digital signals

  • Programming LEDs

  • Setting up a temperature sensor

  • and more!

No prior knowledge or experience of electronics or coding is necessary.

Digital Photo Camp

Discover Digital Photography with this fun and hands-on Summer Camp. This camp will help you succeed in making beautiful photographs and understand how your camera works to capture light and motion.

This camp offers hands-on learning, daily lessons, walking field-trips, and an introduction to Adobe Lightroom to post-edit their photographs. Topics covered are the exposure triangle a.k.a. manual camera functions (ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture), depth of field, and motion. Students will have an understanding of how the camera interprets light and we will discuss composition techniques students can apply to their daily image making.

We will explore taking pictures of a variety of subjects, focusing on topics such as black and white, color, shapes, textures, leading lines, landscape and portraits.
*Students should be comfortable walking for a good part of the day.

Camera requirements: Students must have their own DSLR digital camera (18-55mm). Lender cameras available on a limited basis with deposit.

All Things Biology: Mini-Camp

All Things Biology: Mini-Camp

In this two-day “mini-camp” students will dive into and explore multiple biological concepts through hands-on workshops and activities.

Day One: Students will see what their own DNA looks like, test how hand-washing affects bacteria spread, and find out if yeast is actually alive!

Day Two: We’ll learn about one of the most popular foods on the Monterey Bay: fish! Discovering the unique anatomy of fish and their underwater abilities while dissecting them and identifying body parts. We’ll then take a look at the microscopic world of cell transport using gummy bears, and finally “Cell-ebrate with Cookies” by designing your own cell on a cookie using frosting colors and toppings, learning the complexity of a cell while making something delicious!

“In The Mix” Mixed Media Collage Camp

Art campers, join us for mixed media collage and summer fun! Experience the freedom of creative expression “in the mix” as you choose which techniques and mediums you are interested in exploring each day. Local artist and instructor Lisa Handley will provide plenty of inspiration, how to’s, project ideas and materials for your collage enjoyment. Doodles and drawings, hand lettering, stencils, stamps, prints and paints, paper and card stock, upcycled materials and more… what will you mix and match to create your unique collage art?!

Students can also select from different prompts such as color, shape, pattern, word or theme as a focus for your media mixing and art making. Project possibilities during camp week will include artwork, artist trading cards, notecards, journals and vision boards you can keep for yourself or give to family and friends.

Explore the unseen corners of imagination where legend and myth lurk in this week-long camp taught by local artist Dana Goforth.

Using clay, recycled materials, and other materials we will explore hidden realms to create dimensional sculptures We will touch on everything from Greek Mythology, alien modes of transportation, dinosaurs, and Mayan pyramids, to Aboriginal dream-time and Hopi Kachina myths. Projects include dinosaurs sculptures, masks of the world, fairy catchers, and spiritual aspects of several cultures.

In this camp, students will learn to observe and draw the natural environment. We will introduce basic techniques of scientific illustration in black-and-white and color media. Students will create artwork based on close observations of specimens and live subjects.
