        $25 total, for all 7 sessions.  Scholarships available.

What is the Journalism Program?

    Goals/Purpose:

  • Introduce students to the exciting world of journalism through workshops, lectures, and visits to local media organizations. 
  • Learn from the experts.  Students will gain first-hand knowledge about the many facets of journalism from top area professionals.    

          NOTE:  Student stories will be published in the Herald newspaper.

    Who Participates?:

  • The Lyceum of Monterey County‘s Journalism program is open to all high school students in grades 9 to 12. 
  • Students who are interested in pursuing a journalism degree or are interested in writing are highly encouraged! 

    How Does it Work?:

  • Workshops: Focus will be on the basics of journalism — the who, what, when, where and why of writing a story. 
  • Behind-the-scene Tours: Exciting special guided tours to local media organizations. Students will get a first-hand look at the inner workings of journalism — both print and broadcasting. 
  • Meet the experts: Editors, reporters, and others will be on hand to discuss what it is really like to work in journalism today.

  • Three Month Program (Nov, Dec, Jan)
  • Saturday morning sessions
  • All sessions will be held at the Monterey County Herald newsroom in Ryan Ranch, with the exception of one session at KSBW studios in Salinas.
