The Lyceum's mission in offering after-school enrichment classes is to create programs that are exciting and stimulating for students, that help inspire them to see what is fascinating about a subject without the pressure of examinations and grades.  With small class sizes and lesson plans specifically developed to incorporate multiple intelligences, students begin to enjoy education and start on the path to a life-long love of learning.

Math and Science


Black Holes, Time Warps, Dark Matter and other Galactic Anomalies

Donna A. Dulo from NASA Ames and MIRA will discuss the many strange objects in the universe which defy the traditional laws of physics, including black holes, time warps, worm holes, dark matter, and many others. She will provide current research and photographic evidence to demonstrate the existence or possible existence of these objects, as well as several multimedia presentations and videos.

Basic Rocketry

Students will learn the fundamentals of rocketry by building and launching air-powered stomp rockets.  Students will learn about the parts of a rocket, flight events, aerodynamic elements of stability, and the effect of fin design.

Advanced, High Power Rocketry

Students will learn about high power rocketry in a classroom environment.  Students will have hands-on experience working together to build a mid-size high power rocket (I, J, or K-motor), and will learn construction techniques using epoxy, rocket design, rocket electronics, and preparing large rockets (6-9 feet tall) for launch using a pre-launch checklist.  This class is intended for students with math skills, interested in a career in science or engineering.  Although not an official part of the class, students may decide to attend a high power rocket launch southwest of Fresno in late May to witness the launch of the class rocket.

How Airplanes Fly

Those magnificent flying machines!  How do they stay in the air?  If your child's scientific curiosity soars right along with the airplanes overhead, bring them to the Monterey Jet Center where they will learn the principles of flight from instructor Jerry Crawford, and experiment with making and flying their own paper planes.

Why do sailboats sail?

Learn the principles of sailing with instructor Jerry Crawford, and experience maneuvering a model sailboat at Lake El Estero.  Everyone will have a chance to test their newly acquired skills when the Lake El Estero Regatta begins!  All participants will be awarded Sailing Certificates.  (note - these are model sailboats only)

Model UN

Model UN is a fun and interactive way to learn about world cultures and global issues. Through role-playing, students will bring current events to life in a simulated UN Committee meeting. Students will also learn to develop solutions to world problems and polish their public speaking, negotiations, team-building, research and writing skills as well!

Chinese Language and Culture

"I listen and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand"

Chinese is one of the fastest growing foreign languages being taught in the U.S.  Take a few weeks to explore this exciting language and culture with instructor Sisi Wu, and begin speaking and writing Chinese through the use of interactive activities, such as calligraphy, role playing games, and cultural activities.  Students will learn the basics of communication skills as well as some of the most frequently used Chinese characters, and discover the intriguing culture, history, and local customs of China.

One of our most popular classes!  Do you have dreams of becoming a fashion designer?  From contemporary casual to haute couture, all fashion design begins with the first sketch.  Join Patricia Lightfoot and discover how to draw designs for wardrobe and accessories.  Using graphite, ink, and mixed media we will explore the world of fashion, taking a look back at legendary Hollywood costume.

Drawing, Painting, Color, and Design Concepts  (October Break)

Learn to bring your drawing, color, and design sense to higher levels of artistry with local painter Dante Rondo.   In this class we will explore use of black and white media, graphite and charcoal, color media, watercolors, acrylics and pastels.  Individual expression and subject matter will be encouraged.  Use photographs, 3d objects, still life, and your imagination to create frame-worthy drawings and paintings!

Wonders of Watercolor

Color is such an everyday phenomenon that we don't usually give it a lot of thought, but colors produce surprising effects, for example, in the way they mix together. Enjoy a fun introductory class in the science of color, explored through watercolor and interactive activities.

Even Picasso was a formally trained artist!  Explore drawing techniques and art media, covering use of line, tone, and composition.  Develop more artistic depth by learning how to shade, contrast, and design qualities into your drawings. You - unique, learning, discovering... This is a fun class to help you create your own visual diary (also known as a notebook, journal, art journal, creative journal, sketch book).  Call it what you like, but in this exciting class, know that you will create a wonderful place to explore, express and explain; while and wonder; dream, ponder and play!  We will use sketchbooks to paint, draw, doodle, collage, write and use our imaginations.  Express yourself, learn new art techniques, and feel free about you!

Training

Babysitting Safety with the American Red Cross

Become certified in Babysitting Safety and CPR in this three session, 12-hour course provided by the American Red Cross.  Students will gain the confidence to make smart decisions and stay safe in any babysitting situation.  Students will learn Child CPR, Infant CPR, rescue breathing, First Aid for choking or bleeding, and basic care (diapering, holding, feeding, dressing) for infants and small children.  they will also get helpful tips on how to interview for a babysitting job, handle bedtime and discipline issues, and how to communication effectively with parents.  The course will be fun and fast-paced with hands-on activities, role-play scenarios, and lively discussions.  A Babysitter's Safety Kit including first aid supplies, flashlight & emergency forms will be given to each student, along with Babysitting Safety Course and CPR certificates.  A great class for new and experienced babysitters, and even for kids who take care of younger siblings!

Men in Health Care

A 2 ½ hour program for young men about the numerous career opportunities in the many areas of healthcare, especially for bilingual young men. Come listen to a panel of men who work in hospitals in Nursing; Occupational Therapy; Laboratory/Microbiology; Medical Social Work; and Information Technology.  Some found their career by accident, others chose it. Why do they enjoy what they do? What are its rewards? How much, or how little, education is required?

The Wonder of Sight

How do we see what we see? What does a colorblind person see that you do not see?  What are various causes of blindness? What is an optical illusion? Go about your daily life blindfolded for an hour and discover how much you depend on your sight. Using models of the eyeball, Dr. Pham will show you the structure of the eye and will demonstrate the use of intriguing pieces of equipment she uses to diagnose eye disorders.  She will explain how she treats them through eye surgery and medicines.

Repair of Birth Defects through Plastic Surgery

Do you have an artistic eye? Are you good with your hands? Then come learn what a Plastic Surgeon does! Some children are born with a very misshapen mouth or lip, or a large, visible birthmark. They face major obstacles to living an ordinary life, as do children who suffer severe burns with scars. With artistry and fine surgical skill the Plastic Surgeon corrects many of these problems, allowing the child to grow into a productive, happy young adult. How? Dr. Goldberg will demonstrate with surgical equipment and/or video the surgical approach to treating these conditions.  “Before-and-after” photos will be included.

"So You Broke a Bone?" - Physical Therapy to Orthopedics

Part 1   Are you a future scientist? An athlete? A dancer? A problem-solver?  Perhaps Orthopedic Surgery is a career for you! Using models of human bones, Dr. Meckel will explain how bones are formed, how they grow .... and how they break. He will point out on X-rays some common injuries to bones and demonstrate amazing things that orthopedic surgeons do to repair damaged or broken bones, including the use of artificial mechanical parts. 

Part 2  After the Orthopedic Surgeon repairs a broken bone, the patient may need to learn how to walk again. It is the Physical Therapist who will help restore the patient to normal function and strength by teaching techniques to safely stand, sit, walk, climb stairs, bend and reach. Falls off a ladder, car accidents and sports injuries are just a few reasons why people need the assistance of Physical Therapists.

Seeing Eyes: A guide to Guide Dogs

Spend an afternoon with future guide dogs and the 4-H members who are raising them. Find out just what it takes to train these highly intelligent service dogs. Try on blackout goggles and experience the feeling of blindness while being led by a harness. Learn how to handle and groom the dogs. Meet retired Guide Dogs and new puppies in training!

K9 Search & Rescue

Would you know what to do if you got lost in the woods?  Join K9 handler Nadene Torres and her K9 Search & Rescue dog Indy to learn some of the most basic and vital outdoor survival principals.  We'll learn what goes into training a K9 Rescue dog, learn just what K9 rescue dogs do to track and locate survivors, and communicate their findings to their handlers.  Students will each get to gear up for a demonstration of the equipment used to lift survivors out of tight spots, and watch Indy gear up as well!

Station Tour

Take a tour of the Monterey Police Station.  Get a fingerprinting demonstration on how fingerprints are lifted from crime scenes.  Take a print of your own thumb, and use a magnifying glass to determine which of the 3 types of fingerprints you have, then take a seat in a real police cruiser!

Geology Rock Walk

Let’s get outdoors and have a close-up look at the geology of the Monterey Area. We’ll be visiting at least six different locations where our most conspicuous rocks appear. We’ll learn how and when these rocks formed, why they are where they are and what they’re made of. We’ll go from the heights of Huckleberry Hill to the beaches of Carmel and Pacific Grove, and into Carmel Valley.
