Youth and Family Summer Classes to include Robot Programming, Song Writing, Crime Science, and More
Classes are filling up quickly, enrollment is accepted on a first-come, first served basis

Monterey, CA – The Lyceum of Monterey County is preparing to kick of its 2007 summer classes for children grades K-12, adults, and families.  Classes range from multi-session courses like Robot Programming, where participants will learn how to program a robot to complete tasks, and song writing, where students will record a song they write in a professional studio and come away with a CD.  In the Crime Science class, elementary school age children will learn how to solve a crime using the techniques used by criminologists, including “dust and lift” fingerprints.

“The Lyceum has always taken pride in the diverse and innovative classes offered through its programs,” said Juliette Calandra Ferguson, Executive Director of the Lyceum of Monterey County.  “Whether your child’s passion is arts and crafts, science, sports, cooking, or animals, we’ve got the class for him or her.”

Single day classes include the family-oriented “Breeding Butterflies” walk and lecture at the Carmel Valley’s Butterfly Sanctuary and “The TOSS, the DROP & the EXCHANGE” juggling fundamentals class.  The Lyceum’s summer session begins in June and runs through August with meeting times and days varying throughout the summer and locations scattered around Monterey County.  Classes are filling up quickly, enrollment is accepted on a first-come, first served basis.

Classes are priced to be accessible to families throughout the county.  Many of the single-session classes cost as little as $5-12 per person, and classes that meet for four or more sessions range from $50-90.  As a non-profit organization, the Lyceum subsidizes registration fees through the donations of individual community members, foundation grants, and the contributions of local businesses.  Scholarships are available for students unable to cover tuition costs.

The Lyceum’s mission is to inspire a life-long love of learning through enrichment classes that aim to stimulate individual creativity, intellectual promise, and academic motivation in children.  The organization has helped local students throughout Monterey County receive a well-rounded education for over 47 years and is now educating its third generation of children. In addition to its extensive program of extracurricular classes, the Lyceum sponsors Monterey County’s annual Peninsula Spelling Bee for fourth and fifth graders, Monterey County History Day for grades four through twelve, and Monterey County Mock Trials for high school students.  The Lyceum partners with five area museums to offer its Music Art Enrichment (MAE) Program and has expanded its Science, Art, and Music Intensives (SAMI) Programs to offer multi-session programs at elementary and middle schools.

In addition to the pending summer session, the Lyceum offers classes for children, adults, and families all year round; the Fall Schedule will be released in August and will include more than 80 offerings.

The Lyceum office is open to the public Monday-Thursday from 9:30-12 Noon. and again from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 9:30-12:00 noon.  Class registration forms and payments may be dropped off at the Lyceum during business hours or after hours in our locked drop-box.
