Shannon Lueken - President
My name is Shannon Lueken and I have been in education for 23 years. I am currently a 6th grade math and science teacher and Academic Coach at Walter Colton Middle School in Monterey, CA. I choose to serve on the Lyceum Board because, as an educator, I fully support providing enriching experiences for our youth. The Lyceum’s history of bringing learning opportunities to our youngsters throughout Monterey County is admirable, and I want to help foster a love of learning. I believe that provided the right situation, each child can become a lifelong learner. The Lyceum does just that. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband, 12 year old son, and 9 year old daughter. I also enjoy reading, horseback riding, and taking care of my cat, two dogs, four fish, and two chickens.

Susan Nine is a retired teacher/attorney. She believes in the importance of the advancement of creativity and learning. Susan says "In my classroom, at the end of each teaching day, we put aside the adopted "standards" and made time for free exploration, allowing each child the opportunity to choose according to his/her natural inclination from many options. This was the magic time. Some chose Legos, some to draw or paint, some made puppet shows, worked in the garden or put together puzzles. It was the time when every child was thoroughly engaged and imagination reigned. I was able to watch every child come alive. We all need to be given time for, and encouraged to create and explore. There is less and less time provided in school, if any, to recognize and develop individual talents and give students time to freely express their natural creativity. Offering a variety of programs that allow children to explore and discover what makes them come alive is a most worthy enterprise". Philosophical Statement: "Be what you are and become what you are capable of -- the future lies in ourselves". I wrote this as a 17 year old HS senior for my yearbook, and now many years later, I still live these words and also try to help others see and live their potentials and be true to themselves.
